Nom porté en Picardie et dans le Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Variante de Châtelain, qui désigne au XIIe siècle celui qui avait la garde d'un château (souvent le châtelain était un simple militaire chargé par un seigneur plus puissant de garder une petite forteresse). Ce n'est que plus tard que le mot perdra son sens militaire. Autres formes : Castelain, Castelein, Casteleyn, Castelin, Castelyn, Castelyns.
